Prime is the Southern Ocean winter and shoulder, roughly April through October and core May to September, when deep Roaring Forties lows track close to Tasmania and fire long-period south-to-southwest groundswell straight at the peninsula. June and August are the best overall months and autumn can deliver the cleaner, more organised days. Even in season, the marquee wave needs a big, long-period swell to line up in a short window — this is a call-it-on wave.

Where the swell comes from

Deep Southern Ocean and Roaring Forties lows spinning up between Australia and Antarctica, whose enormous unobstructed fetch delivers the long-period south-to-southwest groundswell the slab needs.

Red Bull Cape Fear

A big-wave slab invitational was staged at Shipsterns during a Southern Ocean swell — the best-documented anchor for the wave, run on a call-it-on basis when a big enough long-period swell lines up.
