The Story of Shipstern Bluff, Tasmania

Shipstern Bluff — known to surfers simply as “Shippies” — is one of the heaviest waves on Earth: a thick, mutant left-hand reef slab that detonates at the wild southern tip of Tasmania’s Tasman Peninsula. Southern Ocean groundswell that has crossed thousands of kilometres of open water slams onto a shallow ledge at the foot of a dolerite bluff, throwing a barrel famous for its “step” — a wave-within-a-wave that warps the face mid-ride and forces surfers into airdrops they must land and hold. It breaks beneath some of the tallest sea cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere, in cold, great-white water, well over an hour’s walk from the nearest road. The danger here is mass and mutation, not merely height — it is strictly an experts-only big-wave arena.

The Long Walk In

Getting to Shipstern is half the ordeal. The usual approach is on foot: fly into Hobart, drive around an hour and a half south to the Tasman Peninsula near Port Arthur, and pick up the marked walking track from the Stormlea Road trailhead. It is an eight-kilometre return walk of roughly four hours — about an hour and a half to two hours each way — that crosses a creek, climbs onto open heathland and reaches a signed junction where the left fork runs out to Cape Raoul and the right drops down toward the bluff, passing a signposted sidetrack to Tunnel Bay along the way. All of it lies inside Tasman National Park, and every board, wetsuit and litre of water has to be carried in and out.

The alternative is to come by sea. Surfers and photographers routinely run boats or jet-skis about 30 kilometres from the Port Arthur area, a crossing of half an hour or more over open, often rough Southern Ocean water. Either way there is no easy exit from this coast: once you are out below the cliffs, the only way home is the long walk back up the hill or a boat ride around an exposed, unforgiving shoreline. That remoteness is central to the wave’s reputation — help is a long way off.

A Coast of Dolerite Cliffs

The Tasman Peninsula is one of the great pieces of coastal geology in the Southern Hemisphere. Its cliffs and headlands are carved from Jurassic dolerite — the hard, grey, columnar rock that gives the region its organ-pipe faces — and much of the coast is protected within Tasman National Park. Nearby stand some of the tallest sea cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere, rising to around 300 metres at Cape Pillar, while the dolerite columns of Cape Raoul drop straight into the ocean a short distance west of the bluff. Shipstern Bluff itself is one of these dolerite headlands, a squat promontory with a small pocket beach tucked at its foot.

What makes it break is the reef. At the base of the bluff a shallow ledge reaches out into deep water, and there is nothing between this coast and Antarctica but thousands of kilometres of open Southern Ocean. Long-period south and southwest groundswell thrown off by distant storms marches straight onto that ledge and jacks up almost without warning, standing tall over rock in the shadow of the cliffs. The water is cold every month of the year, sitting at roughly 11 to 13°C through the winter swell season, so a thick hooded 5/4 wetsuit with boots and gloves is simply the price of entry, easing to a 4/3 only in the warmest months.

The Mutant Slab

Shipstern is a heavy left, and its character is mutation rather than pure size. As the wave wraps over the uneven reef the face warps into “steps” — abrupt double-ups, a wave-within-a-wave, that can hurl a rider through several mid-barrel airdrops in a single ride at speeds reported around 50 kilometres an hour. It holds thick, slabbing faces widely described in the six-metre range and larger on its biggest days, though figures vary by source and are best read as estimates. It works with large south and southwest Southern Ocean groundswell, generally autumn through winter into spring — autumn often cited for the cleanest waves and winter for the biggest — and it wants a clean offshore northerly to groom the face.

Tasmanian surfers began probing the bluff in the mid-1990s, after an early reconnaissance mission around 1994, and it was carried to a global audience by surf films and photo coverage around the turn of the millennium. First ridden on the biggest days behind jet-skis, it is now paddled as well as towed, and the Red Bull Cape Fear big-wave event was staged here in 2019 and again in 2021. The hazards are severe and unforgiving: the mutant step, a shallow reef, the rock and cliff that loom at the end of the ride, cold water that saps strength on hold-downs, great whites and aggressive seals, and a remote setting where rescue is genuinely difficult. For everyone outside the small circle with the experience and safety cover to take it on, Shipstern is a wave to watch from the clifftop — which, on a big, clean day, is one of the great spectacles in surfing.
