Sebastian Inlet Surf Season
Florida, USA · part of the Sebastian Inlet spot guide
Two engines run opposite seasons. Hurricane and tropical groundswell from August to October or November sends long-period east-to-southeast swell — the source of the biggest, cleanest days — while winter cold fronts and nor’easters from November to March bring northeast windswell and short-to-mid-period groundswell, the most consistent rideable surf though often wind-affected. Summer is mostly small with an afternoon sea breeze, though the jetty wedge can still square up small windswell at dawn.
Where the swell comes from
Atlantic hurricanes and tropical systems for the long-period east-to-southeast groundswell, cold fronts and nor’easters for the winter northeast windswell, and a small summer background the jetty can still organise.
Historic swells at Sebastian Inlet
Hurricane Nicole
An offshore Atlantic hurricane delivered clean groundswell to the Florida east coast; the run was documented from Sebastian down to Cocoa Beach.
Hurricane Matthew
A major hurricane paralleling the coast produced large surf up and down Brevard — a before-and-after swell rather than an all-day session, and destructive at its peak.
