How Saquarema (Itaúna) Works

Praia de Itaúna at Saquarema, on the coast east of Rio de Janeiro, is Brazil’s contest cathedral — the “Maracanã of surf” and the Championship Tour’s Rio venue since 2017. Its marquee wave, the Point, is a hollow left that wedges up on a sandbank against the rock shelf beneath the church headland and peels toward the rocks; peaks run both ways along the beach, and a right called Barrinha breaks on the far side of the rocks on south-west swell. It is a beach break with the power of a point, and geography explains why.

Three things make Itaúna heavy. First, the beach faces the open South Atlantic south and south-east window with no island shadow. Second, the continental shelf narrows to about 85 km here, so long-period groundswell from the South Atlantic lows arrives with less energy lost to bottom friction than at the beaches of the Santos Bight. Third, the rock shelf under the church of Nossa Senhora de Nazareth traps southbound littoral sand into a bank, and a hole of deeper water beside the rocks refracts south-east swell onto that bank — a wedging, hollow left that can run 200 metres and more toward the rocks on a big swell.

Direction sorts the waves: east-south-east through south focuses energy on the Point left, while south-west to south-south-west favours Barrinha, the right beyond the rock slab. It surfs at every tide but is best on a low-to-mid tide on the push; high tide throws a strong backwash across the beach. Submerged rocks sit near the headland, and Barrinha breaks onto an exposed one.

East-south-east through south — around 135 to 180° — focuses energy on the Point left; south-west to south-south-west favours the Barrinha right on the other side of the rocks. The full window runs from about 100 to 240°.

Which wind is offshore at Saquarema?

Anything from the north quadrant — north-west through north-east — with the pre-frontal north-west the classic groundswell pairing. Summer afternoons bring a south-east sea breeze straight onshore.

Is there a buoy for Saquarema?
