The Story of Mavericks, California

Mavericks is big-wave surfing’s cold-water proving ground: a V-shaped mountain of North Pacific swell that detonates half a mile off Pillar Point, twenty-five miles south of San Francisco. It was named in the early 1960s — accounts vary on the year — for a white-haired German Shepherd called Maverick who kept swimming out after his owner’s friends, and for fifteen years it belonged to exactly one surfer. Today it stands with Waimea, Jaws and Nazaré among the heaviest waves on Earth, and it remains the coldest and loneliest of the lot.

Cold Water, Long Ramp

The physics were mapped in 2007, when USGS and state seafloor surveys imaged the reef in high resolution: a long sloping ramp of fault-tilted Purisima Formation seabed — rock laid down some five million years ago — rises from roughly 100 feet of water to a shallow ledge, flanked by deep troughs. Long-period west-northwest swell slows over the ramp while the energy on either side keeps its speed, folding each wave into a single V-shaped peak that breaks mostly rightward over the “boneyard” rocks inside. Everything else about the place is unwelcoming on purpose: 48–55°F winter water, thick fog, long-period ocean storms, and a lineup inside the Red Triangle, the white-shark waters that run from Bodega Bay to Big Sur. Season is November through March, groomed by light easterly wind.

The Dog, the Kid, and “Cold Sweat”

Three surfers rode the small inside waves here in the early sixties and named the spot for the dog who enjoyed it most — then judged the outer peak too dangerous to ride. It stayed unridden until 1975, when Jeff Clark, a seventeen-year-old from Half Moon Bay High, paddled out alone on a twenty-foot day. A natural goofy-footer, he taught himself to surf switch-stance so he could face the rights — and for some fifteen years he surfed one of the world’s heaviest waves essentially by himself, unable to convince anyone to join him. On January 22, 1990 Dave Schmidt and Tom Powers finally paddled out with him; Surfer magazine’s June 1992 feature “Cold Sweat” did the rest, and the secret spot became a world stage almost overnight. Clark still shapes Mavericks guns and runs Mavericks Surf Company down at Pillar Point Harbor.

Giants, Titans, and the Price

Ten contests ran here between 1999 and 2016 — starting with Quiksilver’s “Men Who Ride Mountains,” won by Darryl “Flea” Virostko, the first of his three straight titles — and ending with Nic Lamb’s win in February 2016. Since then permits, sponsors and organizers have churned without another event, and as of the 2025–26 winter there is no sanctioned Mavericks contest. The wave never needed one: Sarah Gerhardt became the first woman to ride it in 1999, the fight to include women in the contest helped push the World Surf League to equal prize money in 2018, and on December 23, 2024 — thirty years to the day after Mark Foo was lost here — Alo Slebir rode a wave officially measured at 76 feet, the biggest documented at the spot. Mavericks has taken two of the sport’s finest: Foo in 1994 and Sion Milosky in 2011, losses that gave big-wave surfing its water patrols and CO2 inflation vests. Faces routinely top 25 feet in season and have exceeded 60. The biggest wave measured here — Alo Slebir’s ride on December 23, 2024 — was officially put at 76 feet by the World Surf League, with the local rescue team estimating it even higher.

Why does Mavericks break so big?

Can you watch Mavericks from shore?

Only just — the wave breaks about half a mile off Pillar Point, so bring binoculars. Park at the end of West Point Ave in Princeton, walk the half-mile bluff trail past the radar dome, and watch from the blufftop. The beach closes to spectators during big-wave events, after waves swept through the contest crowd in 2010.

When does Mavericks break?

November through March, on large west to west-northwest groundswells of sixteen seconds or more, ideally with light easterly (offshore) wind. Winter water runs a wetsuit-testing 48–55°F.

Has anyone died surfing Mavericks?
