Prime is the Indian Ocean dry season, April to October, when southwest groundswell from the Roaring Forties is most consistent and winds most often light and offshore, with May to September the strongest core. The Mentawais are exceptionally consistent, so HTs gets rideable pulses effectively year-round, but size, period and clean-wind frequency all drop through the November–March wet season. August is often flagged as one of the best bets anywhere on Earth.

Where the swell comes from

Deep-ocean groundswell spun up by Southern Ocean and Roaring Forties gales, tracking thousands of km northeast to hit the exposed Mentawai reefs.

Classic dawn-glass day

A widely documented peak-season session firing clean at dawn before the wind came on by mid-morning — the archetypal August prime-season pattern rather than an outsized swell.
