How Strickland Bay Works

Strickland Bay is a limestone reef on the south side of Rottnest Island (Wadjemup), eighteen kilometres off Fremantle, Western Australia — the venue of the 2021 Rip Curl Rottnest Search, the only Championship Tour event ever run there. A left with a barrel take-off, long walls and a shallow end section is the main wave; a shorter right peels the other way and closes out in size. Its secret is position: the island sits on the outer shelf, so it takes the Southern Ocean groundswell that Perth’s beaches never see.

Perth’s metropolitan beaches are shielded by the Five Fathom Bank and the Garden Island reef ridge, which strip roughly 39 percent of the offshore wave energy on average before it reaches the mainland — locally up to 90 percent. Rottnest sits outside all of that on the Rottnest Shelf, with nothing between its south coast and the Southern Ocean. South-west groundswell crosses a wide, gently sloping middle shelf with little frictional loss, then meets a limestone platform that rises from eight to fourteen metres to near-dry within a few hundred metres: rapid shoaling, heavy A-frame peaks, and barrels.

The platform’s orientation lets the left run along the reef with long workable walls into a very shallow “almond-shaped squeeze” of an end section — “on the surgeon’s table”, as a local forecaster put it — and the left holds swell to about 4.5 metres. The right tubes into a manoeuvrable face, is at its best around 2 to 2.5 metres and gets sketchy and shuts down above 3.5. Longer periods feel the reef earlier and jack harder, which is why the left favours long-period groundswell. The island’s tourism authority advises a higher tide; on a low the reef is dry.
