Steamer Lane Surf Season
California, USA · part of the Steamer Lane spot guide
Prime is November to February, with December and January the standout core, when North Pacific storms fire long-period west-to-northwest groundswell straight into the refraction that lines the point up. Summer is smaller but not dead — the Lane also picks up Southern Hemisphere southwest and south swells that favour the Point section, the shoulder-season sessions. Spring can add short-period northwest windswell but messier, wind-driven surf.
Where the swell comes from
North Pacific and Gulf of Alaska winter storms for the primary west-to-northwest groundswell, and Southern Hemisphere storms for the secondary summer southwest and south swells reaching the outer point.

O’Neill Cold Water Classic
Northern California’s premier pro event, run at Steamer Lane since 1987 in an autumn window — the marquee recurring big-stage moment for the Lane.
Cold Water Classic return
The event ran again at the Lane, won by Michael Dunphy and Zoe Benedetto — one of the documented dated contest days, since the region’s big-wave records attach to nearby Mavericks rather than the Lane.
