The Story of Snapper Rocks & the Superbank, Gold Coast

Snapper Rocks is the takeoff of the Superbank — the two-kilometer sand point that runs from behind a cluster of rocks on the Queensland–New South Wales border through Rainbow Bay, Greenmount and Coolangatta to Kirra. It is the rare world-class wave that is largely man-made, the home break of a dynasty of world champions, and on its day one of the longest, hollowest and most crowded rights on the planet.

The Machine in the River Mouth

The Superbank exists because of a river. Training walls built at the Tweed mouth from 1891 blocked the natural northward drift of sand, starving the southern Gold Coast beaches and silting the river entrance. The fix — the Tweed River sand bypassing project, pumping from 2001 — draws sand through jet pumps on a 450-meter jetty south of the river and pipes it under the entrance to outlets off Duranbah, Snapper Rocks and Greenmount. Local surfers, led by 1978 world champion Rabbit Bartholomew, lobbied for surf-friendly placement, and the result exceeded anyone’s plan: a single continuous bank stitching five breaks into one two-kilometer point. Feed it cyclone-season east-southeast swell — roughly December through May — with southwest offshores and it produces sand-bottom barrels of absurd length and mechanical perfection.

Kirra’s Ghost and the Cooly Kids

Before the Superbank there was Kirra — the groyne-shaped point at the far end of the stretch that many called the best barrel in the world. Michael Peterson ruled it in the mid-seventies, the first of the “Coolangatta Kids” alongside Rabbit Bartholomew and Peter Townend — the crew whose assault on Hawaii gave surfing “Bustin’ Down the Door.” The sand that built the Superbank largely buried Kirra through the 2000s, a trade the Gold Coast still argues about; the old point now comes back to life in bursts on major cyclone swells, as it did during Cyclone Alfred in March 2025. The next generation grew up on these same points: Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Dean Morrison — the second wave of Cooly Kids — and Stephanie Gilmore, the eight-time world champion from the Tweed side of the border, queen of Snapper Rocks.

Behind the Rock

The takeoff behind the rock is surfing’s most famous conveyor belt: jump off at the designated spot, swing into a wave that may run a few hundred meters or, on the day of days, most of the way to Kirra — then get out and walk back up the point, past a lineup that can number several hundred along the bank. The Quiksilver and Roxy Pros made Snapper the world tour’s traditional season opener from 2002, when Joel Parkinson won the first one at home. After years away, the Championship Tour returned in May 2026, and the story wrote itself: Stephanie Gilmore took a record 34th tour win in front of her home crowd, alongside Ethan Ewing. With surfing widely tipped for the Brisbane 2032 program, the point may yet host the Olympics. Gold Coast Airport is ten minutes away — few world-class waves are easier to reach, and none are easier to watch, with the whole bank visible from the Point Danger lookout.

Most rides run one section — a few hundred meters of fast, hollow sand-bottom wall. On the right east-southeast swell the bank connects, and rides from behind the rock through Greenmount toward Kirra approach two kilometers; the full link-up is the stuff of Gold Coast legend.

When is the best time to surf the Superbank?

Cyclone season — roughly December through May — when Coral Sea systems send east to southeast swell straight down the point, groomed by southwest offshore wind. Winter south swells still hit the points but connect the bank less often.
