How Punta Roca Works

Punta Roca is a right-hand cobblestone point on the western headland of Puerto de La Libertad’s bay, El Salvador — the wave that made “Surf City” and, since 2022, an annual stop on the World Surf League Championship Tour. Long-period South Pacific groundswell wraps the south-east tip of a boulder point and peels north-east toward the town’s piers through steep walls and several barrel sections before softening on the inside at La Paz.

The offshore bathymetry does little — the shelf is wide and gentle all the way to the Middle America Trench — so the magic is nearshore. An underwater ridge of river sediment extends south from the point, laid down over geologic time by the Río Chilama, and together with the deep curve of the headland it refracts south-southwest swell around the tip and onto the south-east-facing flank. The longer the period, the more the lines bend, which is why 13-to-17-second groundswell lines up the whole point while short-period swell arrives as peaks over pebbles.

The result is a well-defined line rather than a shifting peak: a tubing take-off at the tip, a first wall, a middle section that invites turns, an inside wall and then La Paz, where the wave reforms into the shallows by the pier. Typical rides run 90–180 m; on a good swell 200–400 m, and on the biggest days the sections link for close to half a mile. Mid to high tide is preferred — low exposes the boulders and makes every section shallower and heavier.

What swell does Punta Roca need?

South-southwest to southwest groundswell, roughly 190–230°, at 13 seconds or more — the longer the period, the better the lines wrap the point. It needs about 3 feet of face to break off the rocks, holds to 12, and is at its best around 6 to 8.

Which wind is offshore at Punta Roca?

North to north-northwest. Dry-season mornings are lightly offshore before a sea breeze near midday; a north-east wind puts cross-ribs on the wave and an east wind brings a bumpy “morning sickness”.

Is there a buoy for Punta Roca?
