New Smyrna Beach Surf Season
Florida, USA · part of the New Smyrna Beach spot guide
New Smyrna is a genuine two-window break. Fall, September to November with October the standout, overlaps late-hurricane-season groundswell with the first cold-front and nor’easter windswells and the warmest water — the peak. Winter, December to February, is the most consistent for volume via cold fronts and nor’easters but is colder and windier. Spring and mid-summer are the weakest, long flat spells broken only by tropical pulses.
Where the swell comes from
Atlantic hurricanes and tropical systems (August–October) for the biggest clean groundswell, cold-front and nor’easter windswell (November–March) for the most consistent volume, and small Bahamas trade-fetch pulses that the inlet bars still organise.

Hurricane Dorian
Sent the biggest surf in months to the East Coast; the New Smyrna side of Ponce Inlet held cleaner shape than the north side in a well-documented session.
Hurricane Matthew
A major hurricane paralleling the Florida east coast produced large pre- and post-storm swell for the Volusia beaches — a big regional event, with spot-specific detail thinner.
