The engine is the Southern Ocean and the Roaring Forties, one of the planet’s most productive swell factories, so rideable size is available essentially year-round. The biggest, cleanest, contest-grade groundswell peaks from autumn through early spring, roughly March to October — which is why the Margaret River Pro runs in autumn. Summer, notably February, brings smaller but often cleaner waves with lighter offshore mornings, so the size peak and the grooming peak sit in different seasons.

Where the swell comes from

Near-constant long-period southwest groundswell from Southern Ocean / Roaring Forties storms; groundswell dominates over windswell all year and the spot rarely goes flat.

Three-storm Pro swell

Three consecutive Southern Ocean systems lined up to deliver a large, powerful swell — forecasters called for around 4 metres at the venue, one of the bigger contest swells Margaret River has run.

Cow Bombie XXL benchmark

The separate big-wave reef off nearby Gracetown routinely produces 40-foot waves and has contended for Australia’s biggest at over 60 feet — the region’s XXL benchmark, at a different reef from Main Break.
