Macaronis Surf Season
Mentawai Islands, Indonesia · part of the Macaronis spot guide
Prime is the Indian Ocean dry season, roughly April to October, when Roaring Forties storms fire long-period southwest groundswell up to the Mentawais, with May to September the powerful heart. March and November are shoulder months that can deliver world-class long-period south swells and in some years have been the best of the whole year here. Even the wet season rarely goes flat for long — Macca’s is famously consistent and breaks on almost any swell.
Where the swell comes from
Long-period south-to-southwest groundswell from the Roaring Forties, refracted into the bay so it arrives clean and tamed rather than amplified.

“Funnest wave” poll
A magazine survey of around 50 pros and industry figures voted Macaronis the most fun wave in the world — 76% named it the most enjoyable they had ever ridden — the citation that cemented its global reputation.
Shoulder-season standouts
Operators note that long-period south swells in the shoulder months have, in certain years, been the best of the entire year at Macca’s and neighbouring Greenbush — a recurring pattern rather than a single dated event.
