The forecaster's checklist
- 1.Want swell from the south to southwest (about 160–250°), ideally southwest around 210–240°; off-window south loses size and shape.
- 2.Prioritise period — 14 seconds and up is what makes the reef jack and barrel; short-period windswell is weak.
- 3.Look for open-ocean height around 3 feet to turn it on, 6-foot-plus for solid barrels, 8-foot-plus for maxing and heavy.
