Lakey Peak Alert Guide
Sumbawa, Indonesia · part of the Lakey Peak spot guide
Lakey Peak is forecast-only — no usable buoy within roughly 3,000 km — so this is a model-swell alert, and the height below is an open-ocean reading the reef amplifies on the face.
The forecaster's checklist
- 1.Want swell from the south to southwest (about 160–250°), ideally southwest around 210–240°; off-window south loses size and shape.
- 2.Prioritise period — 14 seconds and up is what makes the reef jack and barrel; short-period windswell is weak.
- 3.Look for open-ocean height around 3 feet to turn it on, 6-foot-plus for solid barrels, 8-foot-plus for maxing and heavy.
- 4.Target mid tide for the all-round session — lower for the hollow left (minding the reef), higher for the right; avoid dead low.
- 5.Score the dawn: the dry-season east-southeast trades blow straight offshore in the morning before wind fills in by midday.
Local winds & tide
Best wind: SE–E offshore (dry-season trades) — from 90° to 160° (E–SSE).
Tide-sensitive though no tide series is modelled; mid tide is the all-round optimum, the left prefers lower and the right higher, and dead low exposes sharp, shallow coral.
