Dungeons Surf Season
Western Cape, South Africa · part of the Dungeons spot guide
Dungeons is a South African winter big-wave reef, prime May through September and peaking late July into August — the window the Red Bull contest historically held. The engine is the Roaring Forties and the Southern Ocean: deep frontal storms fire the big, long-period southwest groundswell the reef needs to break at all.
Where the swell comes from
Deep Southern Ocean and Roaring Forties frontal storms southwest of the Cape drive the big, long-period southwest groundswell; only the largest, best-aligned swells wake the deep reef.
Historic swells at Dungeons
Twiggy’s 61-footer
On a giant day, Grant "Twiggy" Baker rode an approximately 61-foot wave at the neighbouring Tafelberg Reef bombie — the biggest South African wave ridden at the time.
The modern day of the year
A rare clean giant swell with an unusual offshore wind gave 50-to-60-foot faces over a six-hour paddle-and-tow session — one of the best documented Dungeons days.
Red Bull Big Wave Africa
The invitational ran on green-lit giant swells through the 2000s, cementing Dungeons as a world big-wave venue.
