How Barra de la Cruz Works

Barra de la Cruz is a sand-bottom right-hand point on the Oaxaca coast east of Huatulco, Mexico — the community-run wave made famous by the 2006 Rip Curl Search and revisited by the Championship Tour in August 2021. Long-period south swell bends around a rock tip onto a shallow sand ledge, cleaves into a dredging barrel, and holds size for two hundred metres into the bay. A narrow shelf, a rocky headland and a seasonal lagoon mouth do the work.

The shelf here is about twelve kilometres wide, so Southern Hemisphere groundswell arrives with little frictional loss. The headland’s rock tip — Surfline calls it the fang that points south-east — refracts the swell sharply onto a shallow sand ledge, where the wave doubles up and sucks off the bottom into a dredging tube, then holds size along a steep sand bank around the east-facing pocket of the bay. Typical rides run about two hundred metres, the best banks four or five hundred; Taj Burrow’s twenty-second tube in 2006 is the reference ride.

The sand is the variable. The beach’s western limit is the Chacalapa bar, a lagoon mouth that opens in the rainy season right beside the rocks and feeds the ledge with sand; the bank varies year to year and is usually best after a big wet season. Low-to-mid tide is hollowest, mid-to-high friendlier; the take-off is airdrop steep and prone to backwash beside the rocks, which is what keeps it an intermediate-to-advanced wave.
