How Arugam Bay Works

Eastern Province, Sri Lanka · part of the Arugam Bay spot guide

Arugam Bay’s marquee wave, Main Point, sits at the southern tip of the bay’s crescent where a low rock-and-sand headland juts into the Indian Ocean. It is a classic wrapping right: south-to-southeast swell bends around the point and peels down the inside of the bay, steepest and fastest up top and mellowing into sheltered water toward town.

The bottom is mixed sand over a shallow rock-and-reef shelf, so wave quality tracks how the season’s swell has shaped the sandbanks — it rates best from July through September once the banks form. The ride commonly runs 200 to 500 metres, a fast top wall giving way to a crumblier middle and a mellow tail that feeds the beginner zone at Baby Point.

Because the wave is entirely a wrap, the face stays at or below the open-ocean height — a big southwest swell arrives long and mellow rather than heavy. The same swell feeds a string of other rights up and down the coast (Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, Pottuvil Point).

Arugam Bay wave mechanics — FAQ

When is Arugam Bay good?

May through September, best July through September once the sandbanks form — a southwest-monsoon dry-season east-coast wave, exactly when the south coast is blown out.

Is it beginner-friendly?

Both — Main Point is intermediate-to-advanced with a fast top and inside rocks, but the same swell wraps to Baby Point and Peanut Farm inside, which are genuinely good for learners.

Do I need a wetsuit?

No — the water sits around 27 to 30°C year-round. Watch the shallow rocks and stay out of the lagoons and estuaries, which are crocodile habitat (a lagoon hazard, not a lineup one).
